Description In the early 1600's, the Manchurians have taken over sovereignty of China and established the Ching Dynasty. The newly set-up government immediately imposes a Martial Arts Ban, forbidding the practice of martial arts altogether in order to gain control and order. A group of soldiers travel the country seeking out those who would flout the law. A swordsman and his disciples decide to take the fight to the enemy, following a plea from a group of villagers. The SEVEN SWORDS is formed and their heroic journey begins. As they lead the entire village to the road of a safer place, they discover there is a trator amongst them. Between this narrow gap of life and death, the situation is further complicated by the blossoms of love.

Amazon.com As the title indicates, Seven Swords is in the epic spirit of The Seven Samurai and its American cousin, The Magnificent Seven. A grittier enterprise, it may not surpass Tsui Hark’s 1990s classics like Once Upon a Time in China, but offers its own unique pleasures--like non-stop action (for which it received a coveted Golden Horse Award). Based on the book Seven Swordsmen from Mountain Tian, the action begins in rural China in the 1600s. The Ching Dynasty has just banned martial arts, and in response seven dissidents band together to fight against Fire-Wind (Honglei Sun) and his minions. The septet includes Hong Kong superstars Charlie Young (Wu Yuan Yin), Leon Lai (Yang Yun Chong), and Hero's Donnie Yen (Chu Zhao Nan). One of the mountain villagers they save is pretty Korean refugee Green Pearl (So-yeon Kim), who falls for the moody Chu. Filmed on location in scenic Xinjiang, Seven Swords is a feast for the eyes. Though some critics have taken Hark to task for the army's anachronistic goth-punk garb, it sure looks menacing. Originally four and a half hours long, this version clocks in at 153 minutes. Hark's soft-spoken commentary, along with Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan, is on the first disc. Deleted scenes and other extras are on the second. Because of the cuts, the complex narrative isn't always easy to follow--and the film still feels long--but the gold-tinged visuals and fight choreography by Kar-Leung Lau (The Legend of Drunken Master) helps to compensate. --Kathleen C. How You Say In English - This Movie Bites the Big One!
OK. everyone else pointed out the only obviously enjoyable element of this film: the combat / action / battle scenes are really good. But the subtitles are pretty lame, the plot vaporizes after the first half hour, the lead characters are so unappealing as to invite apathy toward their plight, and after tolerating at least half of the movie's banal non-sequiturs, you may find your mind wandering to more pleasant thoughts... like having your gums scraped or painting your house with your toothbrush. One very small example - two refugees are hiding out in a blizzard with a man who appears to be some kind of Sherpa herdsman; the people do not understand one another so communication is nonexistent, suddenly giant meteors fall and a hidden valley with bright flowers appears for a moment, after which the snow is in place again and the Ancient Master of All Martial Wisdom sends forth the seven swordspersons to defend the poor villagers from the Emperor's servants, who behead everything in sight. I was rather hoping that Godzilla would appear in a moment and begin trampling everything to dust, but no such luck.

Yeah... the whole movie is like that. Save your money and get something useful.
I bought this for five bucks at Wally World and still feel ripped off just becuase a couple of hours of my life were used up watching it.

Too convoluted...
The plot was basic, but made unnecessarily complicated by the large cast of big name HK movie stars.

I bought this movie to see Donnie Yen action, and he pretty much played just a small role.

Seven Swords
This is the modern day Magnificent Seven. If you are a Donnie Yen fan it is a keeper. Movie was excellent.

I loved it!
I'm not sure why this movie has received so much flack! I enjoyed it, and continue to watch it. The fighting is hardcore, this is definitely not for the squeamish, though. I heard awhile back, that there was going to be a sequel, but most likely it was put to rest, from the backlash of the less intrigued which, seriously sucks for those who enjoyed it.

Cut to death
Seven swords is a really good movie, but feels like its a smaller portion of something bigger. Then when you go through the special features you find out there was a cut that was almost four hours. This helped me understand why there were so many gaps in the story, and backstory. But the cut provided was very entertaining, with some great fights, and some very unique bad guys, which is often a rarity in kung fu movies. The only real complaint I had, beyond the aforementioned wholes in the story, would be the dubbing. Most was very off, but donnie yens voice sounded more like he was michael clark duncan than donnie yen. Given I've seen donnie yen do his own dubbing several times I was suprised that not only he didn't do it, but that he had such a different sounding voice. Otherwise the movie is entertaining, but more of a portion of a whole concept. Worth watching
