Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, U.S. Wireless)
Manufacturer: Amazon.com
Release Date: 2009-02-23
Price:     Out of Stock

Product Description
At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. Barely a third of an inch in profile, you'll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is as easy to hold and use as a book. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position. The page-turn buttons now flex inward to prevent any accidental page turns when picking up or handling Kindle. Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box--no setup, no cables, no computer required. With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. And unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot.

Customer Reviews
I like it but ...
I received a refurbished unit with instructions to plug it to charge it up but there was no power plug on the end of the cord. It took 5 calls or emails to straighten this out, amounting to over a week with the Kindle but no way to use it. That seems a bit much. The service techs were polite and wanted to help but it seemed to take time to find the right person and to straighten out the problem. Once I had the Kindle working, I enjoyed it. This product is evolving. Let's see how well it does in competition with Nook (better IMO) and IPad (Kindle will have to work some to maintain market share with the IPad around.)
I purchased a skin and a cover which are essential for protecting the Kindle.

Wish I had known.
I liked this product a lot more before I found out there was a new version that was smaller with more contrast and $50.00 cheaper. I would have waited a month had I known.

Kindle a bummer
Nice enough e-reader but the inability to access library books is a bummer. Why "buy" a book and not be able to share it. I can loan a hard copy of a purchased book to anybody. This product is way to restrictive. I returned it! Amazon e-books are very expensive. I don't get it....no printing or distribution cost.

Reading Ease
Primary reason for purchase was for travel. We spend months at a time in the RV and it is nice not to haul the extra weight of books since we are avid readers. Very easy to browse, order, and download. And we can still highlight and bookmark passages we want to reread. We can still receive our Readers Digest and an added benefit of receiving our daily newspaper. There have been some complaints about the lack of pictures in the paper but we want the news so we are satisfied. Very easy to use and instructions are easy to understand. I truly appreciate the dictionary always being at hand. My only complaint is the "joy stick". I have tremors and this is very small and sensitive to touch. I sometimes have to go foward and back before being able to highlight the item I need. Frustrating but not a big problem. Overall we are very satisfied. They came out with the latest upgrade a few days after we bought this. I understand the problem I mentioned has been improved.

It goes everywhere with me...
I wasn't sure about an e-book reader. I mean who wants to give up the greatness of a real book? They are heavy, you can fold the pages, you can drop it in the bathtub, you can drop it in the lake while fishing, you can write in it, you can tear it, you can fold the spine backwards, and it has that book smell....
I just couldn't see why people would want to give this up. After a visit from a friend who had a Kindle I seriously begin looking at these and this just after the first orders of the generation 3 Kindle have shipped. After a hasty purchase on eBay I am no inseparable from my Kindle. I absolutely love it. No more hurting my hands and wrists from the weight, no more wondering where I'm going to store more books, and no more buying a used book that they seller has failed to describe accurately. Of course giving up the physical book means I can't sell/trade it when I'm done with it. And I can't just give the book to my bookworm mother for reading. However, these are minor details. With this Kindle I can now read all those 1000+ page books with the teensy little print and the newest releases without spending $30+ on a hardback I don't really want. The real selling point for me was the weight loss, and the ability to blow up the print. Reading a book just isn't worth eye strain because the publisher doesn't want to use bigger print.

Bookworms rejoice, this thing is great! I'm now waiting patiently for my 3rd generation to arrive in the mail and have converted my mother as well. Amazon thanks for the Kindle. I have compared it to the Sony ereader I could touch and feel at Borders. As far as I'm concerned there is no comparison. I think the 2nd generation is superb I just can't wait to the latest and greatest.
